Here's an old faithful, not too far from Napa Valley, CA. It's St. Helena in the background there. Stinks for the first few minutes, then you get used to it...but man, the stench. One in color, one in B&W...which is better? I can't decide.

Really interesting shot. I do prefer the color version.

I like the color one. The black and white doesn't seem to have enough contrast. The color one has a nice warm feel. I think too many of the colors show up as the same shade of grey in the B & W.

The color is more attractive to me.

Thanks for the replies. Might have to tweak the b&w one. The color one seems fine, too, though. Think I might print the color one, though.

You have the geyser right in line with a tree. You need to isolate your subject better next time.

The B&W one is my pick. Contrast could be bumped up a bit, seems a little too grey to me.

The BW got my vote as well. I like the mood that it has over the color version, just my though on it .

Was aligning the geyser and palm purposeful? It's an interesting overlap with the explosion of the palm fronds at the top, but a little curious. May shifting to the right a little would provide and interesting arrangement of the mountain, geyser and palm (or may two of the three) in a more balanced composition. I prefer the color for this one.

Thanks, I appreciate the honesty.

As for alignment -- we had 5 minutes until the 'display' closed. I walked in, took some shots, as this happens once every few minutes. The lady at the ticket counter said we could maybe see it once, if we were lucky.

Sure enough, I hear the pressure. I started 'firing' the camera, just to get a few shots of the 10-20 second display. Didn't even think about it...but, I felt I could get some shots to compare the spout to the relative height of the tree.

Glad some like it, and glad some don't. It helps to know...for future references.

I agree with the bad angle of the tree behind it. If you want to show scale you should place it so the tree is off to the side of the geyser.

Trust me, that was the original plan...till we got screwed over because of our flight. That changed everything...and for me, the site was worth it. No Yellowstone, but a good memory, nonetheless. Vacations are short...so, had to do lots in a little bit of time. Does anyone really relax on vacations?

Not me... my wife's biggest complaint of me... But she does like the photos of our kids, so she basically gave up...

Your photo is just fine. Just clone out the tree behind, that's all. ;)

I originally thought the tree-gyser alighnment was on purpose. Its really quite centered. You needed to respond with verbage recanting tribal elders, palm fronds and the viral masculine symbolism. Maybe a paragraph about sunken shrunken heads. Instead, you caved and lost your chance. DanielD
