I was at Phillip Island today and caught the tail end of this crash at turn 1. Anyone want a 2nd-hand bike? Only ridden on weekends.

Was it a two-bike wreck or did it split in half?!?
Must have been a horrifying accident. Looks like he was okay at least.

It was a single bike crash. The bike well and truly tore itself apart. The entire front end broke off after it dug in to the graveltrap and somersaulted through the air.

I still think gravel traps are a bad idea for bike racing, problem is you cant just get rid of them that easily since all the cars need them.

He's paid to race, not pavement surf into the kitty litter. Hence the dejected look. :D

Looks like a typical lowside. Bike will be FUBAR'd, but he'll have another one ready for the next race. Unlike some of us who have to finance our bikes.

I really like 2,3 and 4. It captures the feelings behind a crash very well.

Actually this crash was during the Australian Superbike Championship race, which was a support category for the World Championship this weekend. There are still alot of privateers in the Aussie series I believe, so his dejected look may well be one of "Oh crap that's gonna hurt the bank balance".

I still think gravel traps are a bad idea for bike racing, problem is you cant just get rid of them that easily since all the cars need them.

Actually cars don't need gravel traps, many studies and new tracks have noticed that you can slow down cars faster with pavement. Many of the new F1 tracks have no gravel because many cars can skip right accross the gravel and still hit the wall at speed. Usually in a spin the cars sticky tires and powerful brakes can slow a car down just as well if not better than gravel. You also have all those times that a car just barely goes off and gets stuck in the gravel for no reason and ends your race. Most of the time with pavement you can just drive through the area and rejoin the race. Saving yourself from ending your day and the race from another caution flag.

If you think about it, gravel might actually be better for bike racing. Tracks that have only pavement run off have no way of slowing down a bike and rider sliding on their no grip bike frame or body work....
