had a great day out with some of the local POTN'ers on a GKPE-mini to our Airfarce open day. Usual aircraft were out and about but one of the highlights (no pun intended) was one of the Austrailian Air Force F111's doing what seemed an awfully brief display but one of the more memorable.

are Aussie F-111s the only ones that do the fuel burn? I've never seen a USAF do one

I asked one of the ground crew (who was sitting the jet exhaust) about where it came from. He seemed to think it was probobly some crazy yank who did it first, and the Ausies picked the idea up from them.

As far as I know we are the only ones left flying them. I have never seen a photo of a USAF F111 do a dump and burn.

The F111 is being replaced by the F18 Super Hornet. This was recently made public but it wont happen till 2010 or so. Then when the F35 is in production the F18 will be replaced by that. So they say

As far as I'm aware we're the only country that still uses the F-111. In fact I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that some war games that were being held with Australian, U.S. and another country's forces, that our F-111 pilots were in the oldest and most out-dated hardware, but still managed to embarrass the U.S pilots by scoring alot of air-to-air kills.

Currently just a P&S, but watch this space.

Thanks all,
I had a go at a HDR blend to try & even out the range, here's a 1200x800 effort - needs more work though, I'm a real beginner at HDR (warning - large file size)

Cool shots Duncan, wish I could have been there, but had a free trip to Wellington to use.

FYI, USAF banned the dump and burn, and that's why only Australian air force do it.

Lucky beggars - the one they gave us here in Canberra for Australia Day was at 8000 feet and at night!

Great shots Duncan.
