I am looking at purchasing a notebook for when I travel. I want to run CS2 and have it fast enough to do photo editing. My current desktop is a HP with an Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHZ and 512mb DDR SDRAM memory that I bought about 3 years ago. I use this as comparison as this has been fast enough for me.

The laptop I am looking at is the Toshiba Satellite A135-S4427 from Comp USA for $879. It runs a core duo processor 1.73GHZ, comes with 1GB DDR2-SDRAM (upgradable to 4GB). I also notice it has shared video ram 224MB. The screen is 15.4 (don't want a 17inch as harder to travel.

Would this be okay for my needs (not too slow)? I know little about computers and don't want to waste money. Any other suggestions? Appreciate any help.

Hey Pacific, Take a look at Sam's Club, they have the toshiba satellite computer on sale for $499.00 It is a 64 bit rather than 32 bit meaning it will run twice as fast, plus duel core processor, go and read the specs,it is a real deal right now. I hope you do not miss it.

64 bit vs 32 bit does NOT mean it will run twice as fast. Infact, innately, 64 bit vs 32 bit has no meaning performance wise.

The real place 64bit vs 32bit comes in (for most consumers) is RAM wise. Most 32bit machines you buy will only have 2GB of ram. 32bits can only represent a number about 4,294,967,295 (or more or less 4GB). So between the video ram and system ram the computer has to share that 4GB address space.

When you get to 64 bit, the address space explodes because the largest number 64bits can represent is 18,446,744,073,709,551,615. Thats 4,294,967,295 times larger than what 32bit can represent. That means you can have pretty much that much more RAM.

There are some minor implications for 64bit vs 32bit on the compute side, but those are not huge and do not represent major differences in compute power except in some exceptional exceptions.

I would look to get at least a 2GB dual core if not more. It is better to invest in a decent computer, it will save you time, which is money =)
