Something a little different for me this week, with some karting. The event was part of a championship organised by one of my local motorclubs. A great concept - hire the local kart track and stipulate that everyone has to use the 'arrive and drive' karts that the kart track has (just to even the field a little), give everyone 20 mins for practice and qualifying, and then a single 40 minute race all for the princely sum of £50. With 26 karts out on circuit at any time, the racing was fast and furious.

#1 Coming under starter's orders

#6 Some good opportunities for isolating the karts against nice clean backgrounds

#7 The winner of the race was kart 1. He won by 0.3 seconds after 40 minutes of racing. Doesn't get much closer than that!

Hope you enjoy the photographs. As usual, any comments or feedback are most welcome.

Cheers,

Simon.

Very nice shots, love when they use clear visors so you can see the concentration. May i ask what lens you were using?

Great shots Simon.

I did a 2 hour enduro a few months back and managed 3rd place, which was frankly remarkable to be honest.

Cheers Andy.

The karts take that fast left hander and then head downhill hitting about 70mph before braking for a 90 deg right hander. There's not a lot of run off, hence the slightly manic look;) .

Cheers,

Simon.

Thanks Dave, and well done on the karting. I've never got away with driving a kart for more than 15 minutes or so without feeling like I want to puke. Whether its the fumes from the engines, vibration or just that my insides are getting squished around on the corners I don't know. I had to 'retire' the last time I drove a kart, it was either that or throw up in my helmet :p  .

Think I'll stick to waving my camera around rather than driving ;) .

Cheers,

Simon.

Good shots Simon, Like #3 your panning shot. How does shooting karts compare to rally cars?

Thanks Darren. How does it compare to shooting rally cars? The principles are identical. The karts are nippy little things though, and can change direction very rapidly. With these karts not having any sponsor logos etc, they lack contrast about the front end (the number plate always seems to be in the wrong place for how I want to frame the kart no matter which AF point I select), so you have to be careful not to get the front end soft as the AF grabs the driver. Other than that, there's no real difference.

Simon.

Very nice Simon, you've caught some great expressions on their faces, I think 5 has to be the pick of the bunch for me. There is a little piece going in Friday's paper about Round two of the SRH Motorsport Photography Ironman Kart Series ;)

Cheers
Ian

Very good set Simon, but you're in danger of going a bit "arty" in #1. I suspect that's the bad influence of all that landscape photography you have been doing :p

I see you found something to shoot during the rather quiet period we're having up here at the moment Simon :)

A really nice set, particularly those with the 120-300 and 1.4x. I suspect i'll be adding that TC to my kit when the MK3 lands thanks to a rather nice cheque from Her Maj's Rev & Customs that came yesterday :D
