Alright, I Got a press ticket (muhaha), only didn't have a fluorescent vest, so I couldn't get in the middle of the track :(.

Anyway this was my first time 'panning', hope I did decent!
I know that some pics need a little bit of PP, and some are out of focus, but here are the good ones (well, to my liking...).

I've mostly shot the pics at 1/100th, 1/125th and 1/160 (if i remember correctly), with my 350D + Sigma 70-300 APO.

Shots aren't bad, but they aren't panning shots. Half of them hardly have any wheel blur.

It is pretty hard if you don't have the optimal place for shooting and it's your first time .... heh.

in all honesty, from my limited experience of photographing drift, i believe it's hard to get the motion of the wheels in a shot and actually show the drift at the same time. i had some where i went down to 1/60th with barely any wheel blur. so i like these, good work.

Pixel peeping is like count the sides of a circle, pointless.

6 out of 7 have wheel blur.
Some are close to panning :D

Good attempt, practice makes perfect (notice how they never say how much practice though).

Hi Bas some nice shots there good to see the movement in the wheels, though you might like this one I took it at Mondello Park in Dublin.

I think my point was missed. I said the shots are good, but they aren't panning shots like the title said. That's it.

What I ment by wheel blur is what you see in the rear wheels in shots 1, 4, 5 (kind of anyway), and 6. The other shots aren't very blured at all. Maybe my definition isn't very good. Sorry.

Like I said, good shots.

what speed are the drifters you guys are shooting travelling at if you cant get wheel blur at 1/60th ?
the guys here in aus are generally travelling 90-150kph (65-100ish MPH)
and i get great blur at 1/125 and 1/160

this ones back tyres are frozen as the driver is using the handbrake to hold the car sideways into a low speed corner

I Had a bad spot to take pictures from, I didn't have any fluorescent jacket with me, so I wasn't allowed to enter the circuit.... hopefully will get some better pics next time, as I sure won't forget that jacket then :)

If i'm correct they were doing 3rd gear drifts, some going pretty fast. Eric O' Sullivan was there in his s2k powered Corolla, he was going very fast. Unfortunatly I didn't have a very good angle to start panning from.
If was in the center of the circuit with all the other photographers it would have been easier to track the cars down the whole circuit....

my advice would be to start at 1/250 and then work your way down.. until you find a setting that your comfortable at.

and the other thing is practise, practise, practise.. get yourself along to as many practise days and demos as possible. 2-3 years ago when my other half first started drifting i used to go along to as many practise days and stuff as possible.. it was as much practise for me as it was for the drivers! lol
but it's helped me develop my own style.

yep practice is important
i started out at 1/160th and worked my way down, i still miss the occasional one at 1/160th and on a good day i can get down as low as 1/50th @200mm and still have sharp shots
normally i start the day at 1/160th, after an hour or so drop the speed to 1/125 or 1/100 depending on where on the track i am and towards the end of the day i will raise the shutter speed again as i start to tire (and cant hold as steady)
