Anyone know a good free file renaming utility?

I know I could use Adobe Bridge to batch rename files, but I don't want to totally rename them, I want to leave part of the filename intact but remove part of the string.

I could to a search on tucows or something, but I'd rather get recommendations from someone who has experience with one and likes it.

I've always like Faststone image viewer... they have a pretty good batch renaming utility in there... has alot of string variables... I haven't tried it to remove only part of a name myself, however. (For example: If I understand right, you have image named IMG_2435.jpg and want to rename to just 2435.jpg)

You've got it. I ran a bunch of shots through Noiseware and inadvertanly allowed it to rename them something like IMG_2435_Filtered.jpg. Now I want to remove "_Filtered" but leave the correct image name intact.

I will check into both of these. Thanks!

I have a utility called Total Commander (external link). It is a double paned file manager with alot of other functions as well. It has a batch file naming utility that is great. You can pick out ranges of the existing file name, sequential numbering and quite a few others. How many times have you ever ran into the issue of wanting to take characters 1-3 and 7-12 out of a file name and put it into your new name. You can do that with this one.

It is shareware but well worth the money. I use it daily for the file manager part of it as I love using a double paned utility.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
