I submitted some of my work to Sprint/Embarq, and they contacted me and want to use my work on the cover of TWO local telephone directories. Large market area 200K plus area.

No pay involved, but I do get to have a "front cover photo by" which will include all my info.

Should prove to be good avertising, if not it's still exciting!

Celebrate by going to the grocery store and getting a nice big steak, some asparagus, hollendaise sauce, a baking potato and top it of with a bottle of champaign. Don't worry about the cost, just tell the cashier what your celebrating. I am sure she will let you have all of it at no charge.

On the otherhand, if you would have charged them the $2000+ you should be getting, you could have afforded to go out and have that dinner made for you at a real nice restuarant.

Oh BTW lets us know how many people contact you from this "exposure", which I am sure will not be listed on the ad as it is not customary to list a photo credit on advertising..

Congrats on getting published but please know that chance of you gaining anything off of it is almost nil.

Congratulations. Makes me wonder what phone company is publishing it though. As I thought these kinds of things were paid. Nothing in life is free ... but nonetheless, great advertising to you!

Care to post the shots you got published?

No sour grapes, just the facts of life. I have never seen a photo credit on a phone book and it is very unusual that it would be used in an ad. So all of his ideas of "free advertising" is not going to happen. Thats what happens when people get suckered into providing images at no charge. Sprint knows just what they are doing. When he calls them to complain that there is no photo credit they will simply say, "That is the fault of the phone company".

I ran into a guy Saturday night that I met 3 years ago at a football game. He provides images for a school at no charge but, they give him credit and it is great advertising. I asked him Saturday who he was shooting for and he replied "still shooting for the school". So as usual, free shooting has paid off as expected.

p.s. I don't mean to be harsh but I don't want the OP thinking this will have his phone ringing off the hook with people wanting to use him in the future. The best thing he can do is get an extra copy of the phone book, cut the cover off and have it framed and mounted. That would be a nice momento of his cover shot to have for a keepsake.

Interesting. Can we see the picture?

I hope you have a contract which clearly states that they have to include "all your contact info" on the front cover. If you don't, then they probably will not include it.

On the other hand IF you do get your contact info - mainly phone number on top of the front pages, it might be quite a deal. Front page advertising is not cheap... and might've cost you more than 2k which they didn't pay.

Let us know how it works out.

WHAT? 200k plus copies and no pay for a cover of the telephone directory they make bucks selling yellow page ads in?

Horrible, HORRIBLE deal.

Edit: As others have said, it is quite unlikely that the contact info will be on the cover, in fact, he will be luck if the credi isn't buried somewhere deep inside the book itself.

Couldn't agree more. Getting your contact info right on the cover page would be fantastic and very worth it. But, I have yet to see contact information on the front of a phone book. They don't even do it for magazines and all that.

It's usually on the inside cover or buried somewhere in the copyright info. Could be wrong though.

Best of luck.

bcap I have never had a cover photo which had credit on the cover. It was always inside "cover shot by" and then my name.

My yellow page ad is a one inch column ad in red and it is $161 a month, thats how cheap yellow page ads are.

Doc the phone company would probably consider his name listed as advertisment on the cover and charge him for it LOL
