Yeah, I am agreeing with you IndyJeff.

I am saying that if it is cover cred (right on the cover), I think it's fantastic. Otherwise, like you said, don't expect your phone to be off the hook.

Freebie? From a for-profit outfit? Sounds like they are trying to pull a fast one. I was contacted by a Zen magazine based in NY. Said the same about no money but credit. I replied, no money, no picture..... cheque came 2 weeks later.

congrates!

lots of sour grapes in this thread, ignore em.

Sour grapes? More like good advice. It's like a girl coming home from her first semester at college bragging about all the boys she met at the local truck stop who were willing to sleep with her. Guess what, honey -- it's not you they're interested in, it's the price.

200,000+ printrun and large company (Sprint) = you are stupid to give it to them for free.

My line is similiar "Credit doesn't pay my rent". They usually wise up pretty quickly after being so blunt.

Now now... don't discourage the girl. Some of us are still young here.

Congratulations :)

(how many of us would be pleased to be in the POTN book? And not be compensated? We'd be jazzed! It's cool to be published (regardless, because it's a feather in the cap that few of us have), though it's even BETTER to be compensated, the affirmation of the good work is definitely something. If the OP is fine w/o monetary compensation, then I say, again, congratulations OP :D )

It takes money for Pekka to maintain the servers, you know. And he's not getting paid for it.

Do you see any ads on the site? I don't.

Is he making a profit from the calendars? I doubt it.

I'm not quite sure what this has to do with my post Doc.

Again, I think MANY people would be jazzed to have their photos in the POTN book and not ask for compensation...

It's certainly the right for anyone to sell or give away any photo at any price. However, it negatively affects the entire industry when people give away their photos to large for-profits just because it makes their little hearts go a-twitter with pride. Nobody is going to pay for things that they can get from idiots for free. And if nobody is going to pay for good photography, then you can scratch that off of your list of future professional possibilities.

What I'm saying is that it's the OP's right to give his stuff away for free and it's our right to tell him that he's being stupid and that he's screwing himself and everyone else in both the short and the long run. So many photographers don't understand their own value. In this case, that value was $2,000+. Instead, this photographer settled for an ego boost. Which isn't even deserved, IMO. If someone comes to you and says "Man, I really value your incredible work; can I have it for FREE?", it's up to you to realize that the the first half of that statement directly contradicts the last.

I couldn't agree with you more chakalakasp.

I had an organization in competition with me offering to sell league photos for $2.50 (at cost). This infuriated me because this doesn't only give them the winning bid, but puts a damper on photographers all over the place.

Why oh why would an organization go with a company offering the standard $10.00 package when you have the imbesells offering it for $2.50?

Celebrate by going to the grocery store and getting a nice big steak, some asparagus, hollendaise sauce, a baking potato and top it of with a bottle of champaign. Don't worry about the cost, just tell the cashier what your celebrating. I am sure she will let you have all of it at no charge.

On the otherhand, if you would have charged them the $2000+ you should be getting, you could have afforded to go out and have that dinner made for you at a real nice restuarant.

Oh BTW lets us know how many people contact you from this "exposure", which I am sure will not be listed on the ad as it is not customary to list a photo credit on advertising..

Congrats on getting published but please know that chance of you gaining anything off of it is almost nil.

This is a bit harsh and i understand where you are coming from, but this guy was so overjoyed about his acomplishment and you just destroyed him/her.
Just my feelings.

Indy didn't destroy anybody.

The realization that you've been had would've happened eventually. The bubble would've been burst. It's inevitable.

I will tell you where this leads. The other guys does it for that price and after 2-3 years of long hours and working his butt off, he comes to see that he isn't even making minumum wage and quits. In the meantime, bcap loses interest and has no desire to do anything like that again because of the undercutting competitor.
Now the league calls bcap up and wonders if he can do their photos this next year. Of course he knows that it is a lot of work and they are expecting a cutrate price so he declines. Now where is the league? I will tell you, out in the cold with no one to do the photos. Oh they will find someone to do it. Someone most likely not as good as bcap and with his experience and they will have a mess on their hands with parents upset that they paid $4.00 for a package of soft, incorrect color photos.

fstop, I know what your saying and to a point I agree but, the original OP needs to understand the money he/she lost by giving it away. Next year who is the first person Sprint will think of to get their cover shot again? The original OP of course and when he/she tells them that this year a paycheck should accompany the job chances are Sprint will find another shooter willing to give it away just to see their photo on the cover of the phone book.
I won't take anything from the OP for getting published, yes it is cool for the first timer but, he/she lowered the bar for everyone else in that district who makes a living doing that and hurt themself in the longrun. They are now labeled as a freebie source for Sprint and probably will never receive a paycheck from them for any work in the future.

On shooting sports...If you see it happen then you didn't get it.
