pocketwizards with optical slave

i have two alien bees that i am planning to use on the shoot next weekend ...so far i've been using cables but this time i need practicallity of wireless slave...so if i put one receiver on one of the bee's and than leave the other on optical slave ....is it possible to do it with pretty strong ambient ...say outdoors

Outdoors, you might be able to pull this off with by using higher performance optical slaves plugged into the Alien Bee units on short cords that you can position for optimal flash gathering potential (still a lot less expensive than several Pocket Wizard units), but I suspect the optical slaves built in to the AB units will give spotty performance outside in strong sunlight. In other words, you might be fine, and you might be a very disappointed human.

But this is just a reasonable guess, I seem to recall a post by Skip Douglas recently with regard to this, and he has AB units. Possible he will weigh in on this.
