how do you get a good DOF when reversing your lens as you dont have any of the aperture funcions available....or do you?

Canon EOS 400d, 18-55mm, 90-300mm, speedlight 220ex, numerous screw on filters, and a cokin p-series filter kit.

Is it easy to do this? special mount? or hand held..

I don't have a special mount but I think you can get something like that for reversing the lens. This was handheld.

Are you reversing JUST the lens, or the lens in front of one mounted on the camera?

Just reversing the lens and holding it up against the camera

Good shots, especially like #2, mean looking Ant and it's like it's trying to jump out at you!

Thanks. it probably was trying to jump at me! I was chasing it around for a while getting pretty close to it.

When the lens is on the camera properly, you set the aperture and then hold down the DOF preview button while you take off the lens. For the bulldog ant I set the aperture at f/8 and the shutter speed was 1/25th second @ ISO 800. I was lucky to get a sharp shot with the head in focus ( i did have my elbows resting on the tree) :D .

Justin
both pics are great captures, I like compositional layout for the second shot.
That shot would look great printed and framed, hell both of them would look good hung on a wall. Well done.

What filter Size is your nifty 50?
you need an EOS mount adapter to what ever the filter thread size is that way you can mount the lens directly to the camera.

I would also see about getting an independant flash unit with off shoe adapter, you'll be able to shoot at higher shutter speeds and a smaller aperture, such as f/11 or f/16 to increase DOF a little. I got my 580EX recently and I don't know how I managed to get some of the shots I did without it.
Keep it up though you have a great eye for it.

Justin, your wish list must be pretty long at the moment :-D But your shots look up there with the best of them. I love the colour and DOF effects. If you had told me that these were done with a dedicated macro, I would've believed it.

Well done again.

Good work Justin. Nice trick you've learned to get macro shots without proper gear.

cheers,
Merv

These are SWEET, I was going to get a 50mm now that I bought the rev rings - that said, with no ap control, just focus, getting one is probably a waste of time for me since I don't have an EOS body, just an A640 body. You just saved me £50.

wow these are fantastic Justin, love them both, 2nd stands out the most though. I didnt realise you could just turn the lens around handheld and get results like that.

Justin
I saw a documentary about that Ant of yours, I would be very careful of that little bugger, A sting from it could put you in to Anaphylactic shock if you are allergic to them, it is Jack Jumper ant.
Makes it even more appealing of picture now.

I like the ant. One of the many critters you folks have down there that makes me glad they're there and I'm here! :)
