crop and comp are fine.

colour is a bit cool/blue to me - is the background mat/tablecloth white in this image?

purists of jewellry photography might also comment on the lighting here in that there is a deep shadow. Given we don't all have light boxes at our disposal I think you have done a decent job of the lighting.

a bit of metal cleaner might have given the ring a little shine! :)

not bad.
Agree on the lighting and the polish.

For that type of photo you need a large diffused light source.

I bought that very ring for my girlfriend a year ago, not that is necessary information:D. I like the picture, but as previously suggested shining the ring would have been a good idea. Also I might try shooting at a different angle, instead of over it try a 45 degree angle, maybe work on DOF.

all comments greatly appreciated, I will try it from a 45% angle and I never thought to clean the ring I wear it everyday and often forget it can be cleaned.

That gold ring, sitting on the little green bag, in front of the yellow background.... looks like your colours a bit off :-)

Seriously, I think you've done an excellent job!

I took your advice and tried again I tried to use custom white balance but i don't think I set it right. However I like this picture - at 100% you can make out the tiffany's name on the inside of the ring. again all comments very much wanted

In the first picture, the focus point seems to be low in the picture, because the upper half is all out of focus. In the second shot it's just the other way around.

While the first shot seems to be properly exposed (the highlights are almost up to the 255 level in the histogram), the 2nd shot is underexposed with the "bluish white" background being at about 228.

Neither of my comments about exposure should be taken as "errors" - placement of you tones is a matter of artistic taste, etc.

Regarding the color balance issue.....if you want a proper evaluation of color balance, the best way to decide that is to embed an 18% gray card in the scene - then you can judge for yourself whether or not it came out correctly.

i like it but i feel it can be better represented.
whats the focus of the photo? the ring? or the bag? i think it should be more clear on what your trying to portray in the photo.
