Hi Mike,
Well first off I want tlo say I am not the master but I do take a lot of pics of babies and children and I know how it feels to sometimes get into the same rut doing the same thing. I went to your smugmug site and my first thought was I saw the same backdrop or two in every pic. Do you go to peoples homes or do you do most of your work in a studio? I go to clients homes a lot so I always have an abundance of new things to put in my pics. As for shots, I know there is only so much you can do with a 3 month old so I would suggest moving the baby around to different positions, this is a great time to get mom and dad in the pic and take some of them holding the baby. As for the kids, I try to take the majority of my kids outside, they are happier out there and I love to capture them being curious and trying to see what they see.

I hope this helps, I think you have great composition you just a need to add a little flavor and step out of the box a little. Feel free to visit my website, like I said I am not a master, but you might get some ideas!

Good luck

Both kids are adorable...and adorable shots but the major thing for me would be the crops, on the baby you've got this big black empty space on the right, I'd crop it so it goes away. And with the little girl, its adorable but now you've got space on the left and really tight on her head on the right. Is it cropped already or is it straight out of the camera?
The little girl shot could probably use a tad of levels, contrast and I dunno if its just me but it looks a bit on the red side, maybe its just an illusion with reddish background, headband and so on?
They're adorable.

I checked out your site, and I like it alot. I own MikeMcLane.com but havent taken the step to make it a nice site yet, it is just a crappy placeholder and I dont advertise it.

I do almost all of my work in the studio, and i really should quit that. I love the control, invulnerability to the weather, and the privacy... But as you said - "step OUT of the BOX". Thanks for the tips. your site is nice

- the babies on the railroad tracks are a bit weird/morbid but the pic is good nonetheless.

TYVM!

Both of those shots were right out of the camera, and i do have many other framings of them. The thing is, I took those pictures FOR a photographer friend of mine who doesn't do portraits. Since he is my good friend, I am giving him digitals for a price (and a hefty price at that). He will do his own PP on some, and he'll have them forever.

I never do this, but I made an exception for this good friend of mine. That is the reason for the variety of crops.

Actually that one of the girl was rescued from being badly underexposed, so i had to process the hell out of it. One of the flashes didn't fire on that shot, so it was about 4-5 stops too dark. It may be a bit too red... Ill take another look at it.

TYVM.

Here is a tighter crop on the little guy.
open for additional CC, of course. I personally hate the pitch black BG, but my friend asked me for a couple like that.

Thanks for the comments on my site, I have worked on it for quite a while.
As for the babies on the RR tracks, I had a mom who has seen a lot of my work with older kids on the tracks and just had to have the same thing. Gotta please the client ya know!! Hey, she ordered a 20x30 of that shot, so I'm not complaining!!

Thanks again and good luck!
Steph

Love the first one; middle of the road on second. The third just bothers me and I don't know why.
