Calibrating white balance using a white card..

Usually you would place the card at the subject, facing the camera. Though you can also check the lighting contrast by metering the card facing into the light source and away from the source (and compare the two readings.

Since the camera meters for 18% grey, having an 18% grey card will give you a reading of the scene without worry about the subjects actual tone value.

Once you have your meter reading off the grey card, you can then determine what exposure you really want (do you want to over expose, under expose to alter the scene, or shoot as is.)
