I have a friend who is a member and she loves it. Anyone here a member? What do you think?

Also, anyone who is a member... does your press pass actually work, or do people laugh at it and still deny you access to events?

No one?

Perhaps this is the wrong forum for this question? Would it be better suited somewhere else within POTN?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

NYIP is a school. I am taking the classes now and am happy with what I am learning, but by studies came to a screaching halt when I started learning about film and developing film. In this age of digital media, I'm just not interested.

Cannot answer your questions about the press pass though.

I'm not interested in film either. Can you just skip over that section? I'd likely be into the film part had I been into photography with a 35mm, but I didn't really get into it until recently with my XT.

It depends on what you want out of it. IMO Brooks and RIT are the best (yes I know they are in different leagues all together). Hallmark is really gaining a good reputation these days.

Press passes from a school will get you no where. You need special clearance by the event/stadium, which is usually only given to the actual working press.

FWIW, having a background is film will make learning digital alot easier, and teach you a whole lot more about photography as a whole. Plus some clients still prefer film

photography is learning about how to make a visual recording in a single frame. film is merely the *format* in which you make that recording. just like the digital sensor in your digital cameda :) and like coreypolis mentioned - you'll learn alot more than just taking pictures.

for getting a press pass, your best bet is to contact the event's Media Director/Coordinator or the event's Promoter. i've done this many times, offering full use of the pics in exchange for full credit. hope this helps :)

finally getting the 85mm f1.2 II DREAM LENS!
but now i want a power pack and go portable!

Please, please, please don't do that!

Press credentials are for the working media... don't give your images away just to get access!

A credit doesn't pay the bills... surely this should be one of the first things you learn at NYIP!

NYIP is actually really good considering its "distance learning". You get a TON of materials, including color illustrated booklets with all the lessons in them, VHS video classes, audio tapes, a small shoot-through umbrella, a head mannequin, and a press pass (i may be missing some other stuff here).

The best materials are the illustrated booklets, each one is a Lesson, and they are really straight and to the point with a lot of examples of the techniques involved in the lesson. You get a lot of one-on-one feedback from the professor you are working with, and you have the materials you need to get the job done.

I took mine like 2-3 years ago, and they were just introducing a Digital class, but I was already enrolled in the regular one. If you know what you're doing, its a waste. But if you want to learn a lot about shooting techniques, the technical aspects, lighting, etc.., its a really stellar school.

does it matter what kind of camera you to have to take he NYIP course? There was something else I wanted to ask but I can't remember at the moment.
