I find it amazing that, on a forum that deals exclusively with photography, there appear to be so many people who cannot spell lens, for some reason putting an 'e' on the end of it. It's hardly an uncommon work in our hobby/profession is it?

Does that say anything about American English education?

Don't make fun of people in the UK. They might send some guys in red coats over here. You know what a mess that was last time.

I don't care if they come with red coats... I want them to come with red-ringed lenses :-D

I did an extensive on-line search of English-language general references and found only two that had the spelling "lense": an old Merriam-Webster (ca 1940s), which listed it as an alternative dialectic spelling; and the Princeton reference.

Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, more-modern Merriam Websters, Random House, Encarta, and everyone else list only "lens."

As for Princeton, well, they ARE in New Jersey.

The exception is in medical dictionaries, where for some reason "lense" is an excepted alternative spelling. So if you are a medical professional, okay, you may spell it "lense."

In photography (journals, dictionaries, references, texts, etc.), however, it is always spelled "lens."

All things aside, this is a photography forum, not an English forum. I, for one, may hate the spelling and grammer used herein, but I shan't lose any sleep over it. Well, not much sleep, anyway--even when it is so blatant as to offend my sensibilities.

My personal pet peeve in this category is people who take pictures with a "Cannon." Must be a messy process.
