AB has two different wireless remotes which one should I get for using 3-4 lights. I will be in indoor & outdoor rodeo arenas possably with other photographers using flashes & strobes.

The differance ( Other than price) is that the more expensive one allows you to adjust the speedlights from the 'master controler'. I recently purchased the RFT1TX/RFT1RX set and am quite happy with it. It requires a walk to the lights anytime I want to change their levels/settings but it's a small area I shot in and I need the exersice:)

The stickies at the top of the forum contains a nice review by Robert on one of these units. Always check the stickies.

See:

https://photography-on-the.net …t=247521&highlight=review

If you are going to be using these where there will be other flash units are going off, you will need a receiver for each AB flash head you use. You will not be able to use the built in optical slaves in the AB units.

Here is also a nice review by Lotto on a competitors offering, also in the stickies. See:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=273624

Enjoy! Lon

I use the cheaper AB remotes in High school gyms all the time and have no problem with them sometimes I am a ways away from them too and still no problem. If I had it to do over again I would get the cheaper ones. One thing of intrest when I talked to them at AB they told me there is alot of problem with interference with the expensive ones. Hope this helps

I have the more expensive Radio Remote One set (two of them actually now)

I like being able to adjust the lights from the camera position, although It took me awhile to figure out how to make it happen correctly. This is something you can't do with any other radio remote versus the Alien Bees. At least that I am aware of.

The catch is a lot of cell phone and other electronic devices interfere with the frequency of the Radio Remote One set these days, which is why Paul Buff and team are working on a new version that works in a more protected frequency. However indications are it will be Fall before they are out at the earliest (and I got the impression it may be a question of Fall of what year, because of some unresolved issues ). But they are working on it. In the meantime, if for example you are shooting in a theater and don't want to run up and down the balcony stairs everytime you need to adjust the light, then the RR1 set will be a good option. Or if you are in a similar situation where getting to the lights once they are set up would be time consuming.

If all you want to do is trigger the lights then there are many options available, but if you want to adjust the AB lights remotely and wirelessly, then right now the RR1 set is it.

I think I might buy the cheeper remote to begin with then save for the pocket wizard plus II or what ever AB comes up with.

Aren't we talking about 2 different types of 'remotes' in this thread?

There are the radio remotes that will fire your strobes wirelessly and then there are the radio remotes that will let you adjust power level and features of your individual strobes.

The remote you are referring to will fire strobes and an alternative to the Pocket Wizard system.

If you want to adjust your strobes remotely then to the best of my knowledge you have 2 ways to do it. Both are from AB with one being a wired unit and the other is a radio wireless unit, which is what I believe Longwatcher is using.

In your original post you indicate you are looking for 'radio remotes' so I take that as meaning you are looking for a controller to adjust power levels without running around. So if you say you might go with the cheaper one then you are talking about the wired units but you have your 'remotes' mixed up in terms of which will fire the strobes from the camera and which will let you adjust the power levels.

No I dont care about ajusting the levels from the camera. AB told me that if I needed a range of more than 70-80 ft too go with the pocket wizard Plus II.

Hi HammerCope,

OK I was not sure based on some of the responses and use of the word remote. I would suggest you try the less expensive AB radio tx/rx system and see how it performs for you. If you find it does not have the range or is not reliable they have an excellent return/exchange policy.

To be specific and for trivia, both AB and myself call the cheap ones "Radio Triggers" and the pricey ones "Radio Remotes" or "Radio Remote Controls"

helps avoid confusion that way as they are named closer to their function.

But then I would get confused otherwise,
