Hi, I am new here and just wanted so share something that has happaned. I recieved my new Canon 5D frm BHPHOTO today. I was very excited to go out shooting yet when I looked through the viewfinder right of of the box I notice a black speck int he upper right corner. I cleaned lenses , changed the lens, cleaned sensor and viewfinder filter and the viewfinger window itself and it is still there. I read various accounts of this happening to many 5ds..Being I just recived it, my question is.. I should be able to return to BHphoto and they will exchange it? The problem is I really need the camera by this Monday.. DO you think they would send a new one before the RMA gets there.. I don't think I should have to pay return shipping etc..

Thank you for any helpful info!

-Steven

If the speck appears in focus when you look in the viewfinder it's on the focusing screen (is that what you referred to as the "viewfinder filter"?) Try blowing on that one (with a blower of course)

Also with the 5D you can even remove the focusing screen yourself. I've never done it but I heard it was fairly simple.

Get used to it. Within day of getting it cleaned, the mysterious viewfinder debris will be back. My 5D has a bunch of stuff in the viewfinder.

Same here... being a anal clean freak, especially on windows, glasses, windshields and the like, that drove me NUTS at first... but I'm also lazy and very much os a pragmaticist...

If you can see it, it isn't on the lens, the mirror or the sensor and therefore isn't in the image path. Don't sweat it and enjoy your new camera. Specks happen. :)

Well, I took off the focusing screen and if I used a light and looked up above that there is what looks to be another mirror. I am 90% sure I can see the black speck i see in the viewfinder. Blowing does not make it go away. It almost appears to be behined that piece of glass.... :(

If it really bothers you, I'd send it back. If you can live with it and it doesn't show up in the data, ignore it. I have a piece of lint that appeared in the viewfinder a few weeks ago. It was driving me crazy, but I'm used to it now. It does not appear in the pictures and I did try to blow it out. Personally, I don't like to send my gear back unless I can't stand the way it is working, or not working for me.

I got my 5D used. It had lots of specs if the viewfinder. Even a couple on the sensor. I cleaned the sensor and just started shooting with it. Completely forgot that there are specs in the viewfinder. I just don't notice them anymore. My pictures are great and some day I will open the thing up and clean the viewfinder.

unless it's on the sensor, you won't see it on your images. if it's on the sensor, you can have it cleaned (or do it yourelf). Even then, unless you're shooting at extreme f-stops, it'll hard to notice...

The speck of dust or dirt in the viewfinder would make me crazy after spending sooo much for such a wonderful machine. I'm thinking of buying a CANON 5D.

there is only one speck that even comes close to bothering me on my 5D, there are many on there but I don't care cause they don't show up in the pictures. Stop worrying about it and go out and take some pictures, you'll forget all about it.

I feel much relieved after reading this thread. My 4 days old 5D has more than 10 specks of black crud on the viewfinder and I think that's the shaving left during manufacturing. The image quality and bokeh of 5D impress me and hopefully I'll forget about the dust and shoot better pics.

The dust in my viewfinder drove me crazy when it first happened, now I don't even notice them. It would be great if you could avoid it, but there's just no way.
