From what I understand Sports Illustrated purchased two Canon 1200mm's - that should tell you something about what is needed in Sports and where budgets are.

And I thought I'd be nice, since the Sigma Japan page took so long to load:

Sigma wrote:
The APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG is the world’s first Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens that offers a fast aperture of F2.8 at 500mm focal length. It covers the widely used 200 to 500mm focal length range, and maintains its fast F2.8 aperture over the entire zoom range. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.

Shooting distance and focal length can be viewed on the lens' LCD panel, which is an additional convenience for the photographer.

A filter can be inserted towards the rear of the lens, and a circular polarizing filter can be used with its ingenious rotation mechanism.

A dedicated APO TELE CONVERTER 2x EX DG II is supplied as a standard accessory with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG.

Its exclusive design minimises image degradation usually associated with teleconverters. When this dedicated teleconverter is used with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG lens, it becomes a large aperture 400-1000mm F5.6 AF Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens.

Have they released the CO2 emission numbers for the auto-focus engine?

I vote for "Sig-nificant other", since this lens will be it for anyone (hobbyist) who purchases one.

either way... how the hell is canon going to answer a 500mm f2.8?

and i need one for indoor sports... imagine 500mm basketball... portraits from across the court... and zoom in on nose hair...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

DPREVIEW has it on their Home Page this morning:

http://www.dpreview.com …07030805sigma200500mm.asp (external link)

We (the Canon junkies) have been whining about a lens like this for some time - it looks like Sigma was listening. . .

I have steadfastly resisted any non-Canon lenses in this range, but I can feel myself weakening. I'm going to keep an eye on this one.

I can see the name game has already started - How about "The Sigmanator?"

Have Fun,

Rick

Looks a tad heavy - not one to have if you've a bad back.

OH WOW~! Just look at that thing..!
I bet it has a enough mass to tear the fabric of the space and time.. and suck the light in..
May be that's why it is 2.8..!! :D
