I was asked several weeks ago to be the track photographer at the local 1/2 mile oval track. For this reason I bought the Xt 2 weeks ago.:) The first race of the year had the ASA Late Model Series in town. I had been taking pictures there last year but they were just for me personally. Now my photos will be posted on the track web site, and already have. As you can see from my gear list I wanted to add a lens for shooting at night, since the actual racing will be taking place at night. I was thinking of the Tamron 28-75 2.8.

Here are some of the pictures I took that day. I know these come nowhere close to most of the pictures I have seen here. If you would like to offer any hints or suggestions I would really appreciate it. Would the Tamron 28-75 2.8 work? I'm on a tight budget. Thanks.

They look pretty good. If you didn't crop them, the 28-75 2.8 should be OK. I'd think about putting a 70-200 on your list though? ;)

The Tamron 28-75mm is a very nice lens but I found the AF motor a little too slow for motorsport work.

Thanks Frank. Would the 70-200 work with the 420EX that I have? It would be nice if I could get that lens. BTW, they are cropped.

What other lens would you recommend with the price range of the Tamron 28-75MM?

Yes. You should get the f/2.8 for versatility (flash/no flash), but with the flash, the f/4 would probably be OK if you shoot on "M" & learn to control the light.
A good used 70-200 f/4 goes for about $500-$550 & holds it's value for when you decide to upgrade to the f/2.8. It's one of my favorite "walk around" lenses.

Those are some nice photos you have there. I should have mentioned that the photos I posted were taken with the Tamron 28-105 F/4. The day photos were taken in Av mode and the night photos were taken in M mode with flash. Of course I had to do some PP in the night photos to brighten them up some:oops: I just might have to hold off on a new lens until I can save up for one:oops:
