to disable it completely in xp you go to the control panel>administrative tools>services - from the list of services double click 'indexing service'>set to disabled.

you can also disable indexing on a drive by drive basis, by right-clicking on the drive in my computer>properties>unchecking 'allow indexing service...'. for instance my database is on one drive, my raws on another. i can turn off indexing for the databases this way but leave it active for the photos.

how this works in vista i don't know but i imagine it's similar.

Hey he's using Vista... cut him some slack. :) He's basically beta testing for the rest of us.

The Control Panel in Vista is set up a little different from XP, but I was able to navigate my way around and disable the Windows Search Index. Things seem to be running smooth again.

Didn't fix the problem with me not being able to use CS3 Beta though. :(

Lord - you should change the title of this post to "Having problems with Vista..." ;) Have you tried to reinstall the CS3 beta?

Yeah, the more I thought about it the more I realized it was Vista's fault. I uninstalled and reinstalled CS3 a couple of times and tried a couple of tricks to fix the issue. No go. I still have previous versions on my machine I can use so I'm good for now. I just hope it doesn't prove to be a problem when the retail version ships and I decide to purchase a license.

I hope not because one of the things it's supposed to be is compatible with Vista. I think I'm going to be waiting a good long time before moving off of XP. :)

Isn't the internet wonderful! Always amazes me how you can find the answer to just about every problem on the internet. Oh Lord, have you tried smacking the side of the case when you get those error messages :p Worth a try.
