Auto White Balance and scene mode?

Hello Everyone!

Just a quick question......I have the Canon A710 IS and was just wondering if you shoot with the White Balance set to Auto or do you adjust it as you go. For example, if you're outside in the sun do you set it to the sunny setting?

What about the scene mode, when out shooting in the snow do you set the scene to snow, or out on the beach do you use the beach scene?

I'm going on a fun trip to Washington DC next week and I would like to know if I should be setting these settings or just leave them on auto and let the camera figure the settings out for me. I'd hate to take a bunch of pictures and get home and find out they didn't turn out very well. That would just ruin me.

I've learned to look at the Histogram to determine if the exposure was right.
