I just happened to find this screen-shot of the Tool Palette in the new (to come in April) verssion of DPP on Canon''s Bebit site. As can be clearly seen there is now a third tab for NR. That's the good news. The bad news is that there is no sign of a highlight recovery tool.

Yeah, unfortunate... somewhere I saw a list of new features for DPP 3.0, as I believe it is going to be called... and don't remember seeing highlight recovery as one of them. If it were to have that, straightening, and preview of ALL changes in thumbnails, I may have stuck with it.

That's why I went ahead and got Lr, before price jump.

I dont know what version of DPP your running but in the one that came with my XTI (version 2.2) already has it.

Look under tools...preferances...general settings, Perhaps there just making it more accesable by adding a tab to the tool palette as currently it is not there.

As David corrected me the new version will be 3.0

I know 2.2 has NR, but it is globally applied. That means all the images in a batch convert receive equal treatment. Moving it to the Tool Palette means that each image can be given different NR.

You are correct. But as I have been saving and spending my money on gear rather than PP software I have been using it. Granted it takes extra steps to use it on individual photos...but it can be done and I find it does a decent job.

It will be nice to have it on the pallette!

I only chimed in in case you were unaware it was there, as it took me a while to realize it was.

DPP is getting better with every release. I use it because of it's simplicity. I do sharpening/NR/ and most of my cropping in CS2. The evolution of DPP is coming along extremely slow- but I think Canon just may be listening to us (the consumer in general) when it comes to adding/improving features in their software.

I like DPP, just wished it had a straightening tool.
I do like the clone tool though

This is from their webpage. http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos1dm3/html/29.html (external link)

"Editing images in the main window is made even smoother with enhancement of image adjustment functions in the tool palette. And the new Noise Reduction (NR) tab sheet enables noise reduction to be applied to individual images."

I don't need a highlight recovery tool as long as I can get it back using the curves/levels.

Looking at the screen shots at the site, it looks like you can see the cropped borders as you edit as well.

Nice, I'm really looking forward to DPP 3.0 now.

It is nice if cropped borders show in main view... that'll be helpful... same with NR tab.

Problem with highlights, however still. If there's no good recovery in RAW, after its converted and sent to PS curves and levels won't do much to help.

I hope they address the fact that the Red channel gets blown out too easy.
This is the main reason i stopped using DPP.

does the noise reducting feature on DPP 2.2 work? i've tried applying it, and it doesn't seem to bring about a noticable difference on screen.

In the prefs you can set a global NR (gets applied to all images).
To see the effect, you need to select 'High Quality Preview' (or some such), also in the prefs. Also, you should view at 100% to judge the effect.
However, I suggest you DL the latest version of DPP (3.0.1), which allows you to set NR per image, and IMO does a better job at it.
