I always feel a bit sketchy taking pictures around/in bars, kinda like I'm invading their privacy as some people like to hide in them.

I have never taken a shot in a bar before because I don't go to bars. I had to deliver something to a client who chose that bar and I had my camera with me. Tried to be very careful and shot maybe 3 photos when I felt that nobody was looking. I still felt awkward.

I go to bars frequently. Always with a camera, and almost never a problem.
you never know what you're going to see. :-)

Agree fully.
My early working years were working away, staying in pubs (as they're called here) and living the wet days and nights in the bar (drinking area) soaking up all before me, but not the liquid parts.
Think that immersion along with stale beer smell when we'd sit down to breakfast early next day, killed any desire, but some of our old pubs have fabulous interiors, rich in history of often dubious repute :-P
I can appreciate both sides of coin, but from the non frequenter, these days, I know the feeling when one enters into foreign space. Like a fish out of water, an intruder. It shows I'm sure :p

Since I don't know how to formally photograph people, I try for candids. These were at a recent birthday party for the little girl in the first photo.

Antti, my high school classmate in the Jyväskylä Lycée in Finland, plays payazzo in 1952. These games are popular there in places like restaurants and hotel lobbies. You put a coin in the machine and try to tap it to go into one of the holes at the top. If you succeed, you'll get from 2 to 9 times your coin back, depending on the hole. If you lose - the proceeds from these games go to support public health.
