Laguna Seca Champ Test

Took the 70-200L 2.8 with IS and 2X TC today. It was the first time panning with this much reach. Here are some shots, all were hand held using Mode 2 IS.

Any tips for keeping the entire car and driver focus for sharp clear shots would be awesome. Oh I shot these at 100 ISO. Of all the pictures I shot today only 25% were keepers. The rest had some blur at the head or the tail of the car.

Nicely done (looks like today was a good day). I'd just watch clipping-off parts of the car. Shooting tight is all good, but when there is only a little bit missing it's a bit distracting. I like #2 the most... no distractions in the background.

The only way to keep the whole car sharp when it isn't moving perpendicular to the camera is to use a higher shutter speed. Don't worry about having the whole car sharp... just make sure something is sharp (like the driver's helmet).

#5 is the best, other than that take Todd's advice.

Thanks for the kind words Todd! I spent most of the day learning how to pan the cars correctly at 1/125 second to keep the tires moving.

I still have a lot to learn, is 1/125 to 1/500s an idea shutter speed for keeping the wheels blurred? At 1/1000s it freezes everything.

Hopefully I'll be able to make another event at Laguna Seca soon.

For the most part... something between 1/125th and 1/320th is great for panning. Going down to 1/100th or lower is really cool, but can be quite difficult. Shooting at 1/500th is nice for most head-on shots.
