I wont buy until next season more then likely but i'm looking for a real road bike to replace my old schiwnn continental. I like hte bike, but it's reaching 20 years old and is made of steel, and i feel it's time to update.

I've currently got my eyes on the schwinn fastback (are you noticing a bias here?) I was raised on schwinn and i've never had one fail me. But i dont want to jump the gun just based on a bais.

I'm looking to spend 700-1200.

Any info would be nice, obviously looking for the smoothest, fastest, lightest bike i can get.

Timmy,
I'm a little bias when it comes to bikes. I have been in the bike industry for over 20 years and currently substain my photography habit by selling Giant. Take a look at the OCR 3 and OCR 2. Both bikes fall within the price range you have set and the major differences are in the grouppos.
I don't want to turn this into an ad for my company so if you would like any further info, PM me and we can talk.
Ian
BTW Schwinn is no longer the same company that made your original bike. The original company ceased operations (bankrupt) about 10 years ago. Since then, the name has ben bought and sold several times with the latest buyer being a Canadian baby accessory company. The bikes have not been built in the USA for years and are currently being produced in China and VietNam.

I have a Trek 4900. Added some Avid single digits, some Salsa levers, and a few other things I can't remember right now. It's a few years old, but it's served me well. I think I only paid 500 something when I bought it, then dumped another 500 or so upgrading.

These are the only two pictures I have with the bike in it. Just got back from a ride... with extra beef :P

I have a Norton 750 Commando - great road bike, smooth, fast, considered a light bike for its time. It needs some assembly...

Oops, sorry, I'll backpedal out of here...

Have Fun

I have looked seriously at the OCR 2 actually and although i coiuldnt confirm it i was pretty sure that schwinn was indee dno longer the same and this does bother me honestly.

I have three bikes, two of them are Schwinns. A home grown and a SAS (Schwinn Active Suspension). The thrid bike is a tandem I built when the X old lady started beating me up the hills, riding this I always got on top first. Schwinn is just a name now. A 100 dollar department store bike at best.

Home Growns are sweet rides. They have the right stuff. Really too bad that the name went into the big box stores. Up here, Canadian Tire (sort of like a Home Depot without all the raw lumber) is the main distribution point for the new Schwinn brand. A real shame.

A fine motorcycle in the best British tradition - kick start only, shifts on the right, Lucas electrics, oil leaks - but what a sweet ride!

Have Fun

I always advise people to get whichever bike has the best frame that is in their price range. After the frame, I would look closely at the wheels. Most other components are easier and cheaper to upgrade later if you decide to do so. Even wheels aren't that bad to replace, but it sucks to spend a lot of money on a bike only to find out soon after that you could have gotten a really awesome frame with cheaper components for the same price.

I own a HKS with a Frankenstein-like assortment of components.

Norton Commando? WOW! Those Bikes were a legend in their time, and my old Triumph 650 Bonnie had to take a back seat to this legend.
Too cool.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

Trek makes good quality affordable bikes. You can get a basic one for around $500.
