Well I went to work today and thought I would take a few photo's in with me to show a few people what I had been up to in my few days off and to get their opinions and views one them. Someone said they would love one of them for their Nan as she loves ducks.

This is the photo she liked:

I'm not sure what to do whether to do the friendly gesture and give her an enlargement which will be at no cost to me free or charge her just a little something for it so I can officially say I have sold a photo....what are your thoughts on this and what would you do.

Also I think I need to add my name to the photo as a watermark, but how do copyrights work with photo's, do I own it by default, what happens to the copyrights if I sell a photo?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Give her the enlargement, since you say it won't cost you anything.
Make her promise to tell everyone she paid for it.

I would at least cover my costs. If you want to make a little off of it sell her on the idea of a framed and matted print. Get a nice frame, add a mat and bring it in. Charge a markup on everything. To give you an idea, I charge a minimum of $85 for a framed/matted 8x10. You could sign the mat in a lower corner but, I wouldn't add any marking to the photo that may louse it up.

Nice shot BTW

On shooting sports...If you see it happen then you didn't get it.

When I deliver a print, it is mounted on matttboard and I place a sticker on the back in the lower left with the Title, © 2007 my name, and my email address. You retain all copyright, all you are selling is the print. (the right for her to display it?) If she were to make a copy of it she is violating the copyright laws. BUT I don't know if your copyright laws are different over there and I am not an attorney.

For friends, family and fellow co-works, I just charge printing price. I don't take photos to make money though, just personal enjoyment. My name does get signed at the bottom though.

Might just be me - and this is not the pro forum - whatever happened to sharing pictures just because someone likes them? I took some pictures at a Renissaince Faire -- a guy I work with has his living room done in that style and said his wife would LOVE one of the shots (a knight holding a lance in armor with his horse) -- printed that one and another of similar ilk on 8.5X11 pearl paper and brought them to work. He was happy and his wife was overjoyed!! Price? Nothing. I have much joy in my picture taking -- I have made mousepads for gifts and mugs -- gifts -- I do this for me. Guess I am a freak as I wade through these forums -- give nothing away, make them pay, computations that are more complicated than the root of pi!! Although my gear, paper, printer and time all cost me -- it is my passion -- am I stealing a pro's account by doing this as has been mentioned elsewhere? I think not and if I am -- I don't care. I have friends and family I like to share what I do with my limited spare time with. So - my vote - let Nan enjoy the duck...she loves the duck...you can share your vision of a beautiful duck with her...what's the harm? None. You are very nice to do that...sometime, somewhere I think (just me again!!) it is just nice to share.
