If you can afford it I would recommend a 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 setup. You will be able to cover most anything with that setup.

Meter the snow and manually set an exposure that indicates 2 stops overexposure. Then watch out for clouds passing over the sun.

for white snow not Grey mystery snow? L!

Every highlight may not be one that you need to keep, so I need to decide what is most important in each shot. I prefer to start with a white "white", & let overly bright reflections blow out.

This is "The Basic Book of Photography". It is an invaluable tool for starting out and learning some of the things you need to know. Just spending a few weeks reading books on the subject really helped me a few years ago when I was getting started. Good luck with your new adventure.

thanks guys.... I'm sure a bit of reading will help. Running the business here leaves very little time to actually sit down and 'read' ANYTHING but I see this as a new hobby.... too old to pound iron anymore... too old to keep up on audio.... too old to care there's 7 remotes on the coffee table...

never too old to GO FAST!

would like to turn this into a retirement hobby of sports photography through the business. Time will tell

ok guys

critique this pic - LOL!
settings as advised were ISO 400, shutter speed 1/500, white balance because of snow a notch past +1, AL SERVO on TV MODE on tri-pod

and it was the windiest day I've EVER seen on the lake, and I know the ISO ( now ) should have been set on 100-200 max

Excellent, I can see considerable improvement in these pics, compared to your earlier photos!
Just keep shooting, asking questions and reading answers..

2KOOL.. Dude if you are going to shoot motosports believe me the 70-200 is too short. You want wrinkled tires from the stands or wicked bike and sled shots from out of harms way. I use the 100-400L 95% of the time. Check out my Galleries..
Here are a couple of Examples BTW..

Jeff

Sunday was my first time out and I know I goofed up the ISO setting big time.. should have been set to 100-200 max on such a bright day, but ......

can you tell us what settings, lens you used for that 2nd shot which is amazing??

Talked to CANON about help for the site etc for free advertising and promotion etc. They have no interest whatsoever and won't even give any discount on any product so honestly? at this time I'm a bit disappointed we went with CANON over another brand, surely there would have been 'some' degree of support for what we had to offer. Furthermore, the rep I spoke with would not even give any advice whatsoever on lenses ?

Keep an eye on the link provided above ... I'll be adding the drag shots tonight

Thanks for the encouragement Hermento!

179mph in a snowmobile! Thanks, but no thanks? :D
Way "back when", I shot some stuff for Rupp. They'd built a rail job snowmobile with a Hemi in it. It was about 18' long, the tracks were about 2' wide, each, & it had a 'chute.
Problem was, the skies had rounded blades on the bottom, so they wouldn't cut into ice or snow. Said that they took it out on Houghton Lake & "ran out of driver" at 120mph. :D

Wish I could find the pics now, but here's a copy of a print from a race they sponsored:

I seriously doubt it....was going to mention that when you originally posted, but you've got to figure that Canon does business with just about every major media outlet in the world and I'd bet that they don't provide free gear to them. Just a hunch. :)
