For taking anything that's moving using a tripod especially for motorposrt peronsally speaking is pointless, you you can't get a steady shot of something moving fast with whatever lens in the 200mm range with a shutter speed of 1/250 or above then you must have shaky hands.

Personally, I wouldn't use a tripod either, except for a particular situation, like if I wanted a tightly framed shot where there's a lot of crud just out of the frame.
The sportsshooters use monopods 'cause those heavy 400-500mm fast lenses weigh a ton on the end of the cam & they can't afford to lose a shot while they're picking up a cam hanging from their neck.

Afterthought to what I said in post #54 & the pic in #43:
That pic pretty much negates what I said. Notice I was standing just inside the curve with a wide angle? But I was much younger then, & indestructible! :D

I agree, tripod is useless. If you are gonna be up close you need to be able to move fast and get out of there if something happens.

As for shutter speeds 1/125 to 1/250 second is good for full panning as they go by, but if you are going to shoot front on, or front 3/4 and want to show wrinkled tires etc you are going to need shutter speeds of 1/800 to 1/1200.

ok, then in this pic, that's why the snow doesn't look totally still? I mean the snow flying up behind the sled etc... like wrinkled tires we should be trying shutter speeds 1/800 to 1/1200 rather than 1/500 that was used in this pic below...

It's a crapshoot? Wrinkled tires aren't as hard as getting a sharp subject while still keeping some wheel blur & comes with practice.

Shutter speeds for the results you want depend on the distance to the subject, the angle to the subject, the focal length, the speed of the subject, & the effect that you're trying to get. Sometimes when I'm playing with blurs, I throw a lot away! ;)

In a while, you'll know where to stand, what lens to use, etc. Shoot when you can. Take notes.

Gotcha ??? L!

Man, and here I thought you'd guys have this down to an exact lens with settings in like one or two posts.

Like Spenc, buy this EXACT lens, use these EXACT settings and save time and frustration of learning to drink beer and chase dirty women.

the 70-200 f2.8 l is is still the best one on the market how ever you can also get great drag shots from 28-70mm lenses and i often use a 20mm.
Depends where im shooting from

drags easy to shoot as you have access to the entire track getting good results is very hard. If you want instant results hire a pro or by stock images
