Hey everyone, I'm looking for a camera bag insert that can fit a 30D with mounted 70-200 F2.8 or F4 (i'm going to try out the F4 but may upgrade to the F2.8) with hood attached (reversed), and then a flash unit and a 17-55 F2.8. Looking for something as small and thint as possible because I want to squeeze it in various backpacks and don't want something bulky like a dakine sequence. This would be the ideal configuration, the flash on one side, the 2nd lens on the other side and the 30d/70-200 right down the middle.

I was looking at this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …EG&addedTroughType=search (external link)
but it doesn't seem like it would be long enough and doesn't seem made to store the body with a lens attached. anyone have other suggestions?

its like the domke insert except with the two middle inserts a little shorter than the outer walls to accomodate for the camera body being place in flat attached to the lens.

I use the Domke FA-230 in all my bags. The inside dividers are a fairly soft padding, sort of like a thin quilting. I usually put a couple of shorter lense or a single long lens per compartment. A body with 70-200 f/2.8 rides a bit above the top; with a 24-70 I could put a short lens, TC or extension tube in the bottom of the compartment. The outside walls are a semi-rigid plastic padding about 3/8" thick; you could cut them to shape as needed and let the camera sag things as needed. The bottoms of the outer walls are all open so you can remove/replace the pads easily.

You could try building one yourself, using neoprene (wetsuit) or other padded material. Neoprene can be glued/sewn using home sewing machines. Or you could talk to your local upholsterer or seamstress to get one custom made. I have been so dissapoinnted in bag manfacturers poor selections that I'm designing my own insert/pads for backpack, and soon to get my local seamstress to make.
