Today, finally, I got the new lens I bought during the weekend photo trade fair. I got such a good price, that I couldn’t resist. I had been looking at the 1.4 version, but I thought it could be a good idea to start playing with this, and if I like the FL with the small aperture, I might just get the 1.4 version as well.

The build quality is what it is, but for the money I guess I have to be satisfied.

Here’s a portrait of the lens + the mandatory duck shot. If you click the duck shot, you’ll get a 100% crop (slightly sharpened), and I think it looks pretty good. The duck shot was taken @ f/2.2.

An excellent financial outlay. I doubt you will regret it.

It's a bit noisy, and the AF is hunting a bit, but the focus is quite accurate when it's done hunting :) I had the fortune of playing with my brother-in-law's Mark I, and it felt quite a bit different. I guess I have to borrow it sometime and do a bokeh shoot-out. I would think that the Mark I should beat the Mark II since it has one more diaphragm blade.

If you're worried about the build quality, don't be. You can drop this lens and it will still work like the day you bought it. All the plastic acts like a shock absorber  ;)

It's a great lens - and being so light, if dropped is unlikley to smash - but don't drop it!

I never bothered with a hood for mine, interesting to see what it looks like. bet it cost almost half what the lens did....;)

I use mine mainly for indoor headshot type stuff. On a full-frame a 50mm makes a fantastic walk about lens - a standard view - but on a crop camera is too long for general use. but for the money this lens costs, everyone should have one!

BTW I always think of the 50 1.8II as the thrifty fifty - the nifty is the 1.4

The Canon Lens hood is twenty dollars shipped to your door from ebay.
off brands are slightly less.

Actually, from the store I got the lens, they wanted 43 euros (that is ~57 us dollars) for the hood. I paid 89 euros for the lens, and knowing 43 euros for the hood is a ripoff, I got the hood from somewhere else.
