Well, being as impatient as I am I decided to cruise to Snetterton to see if I could take pictures of anything and (to my luck) there was a bike trackday.
I’ve shot bikes once in my life and struggled so I wasn’t expecting huge success, but I’ll leave the comments down to you guys!
Pete

not a bad effort... did you use a hood? there seems to be a big lack of contrast... a faster shutter would have sharpened the riders up a bit more and still given enough blur but good shots all the same for 1st time.

Not bad---I agree try fast shutter speed.

Nice first effort, but I agree with the others about going with a little higher shutter speed, as you get more experienced with it you can work down to the slow speeds.

Centre focus point - 1/320 in Tv mode is a good starting point for most motor sports. A1 servo mode is the 350 has it

I copied the Kawaski picture and sharpened it in Picasa. Makes a big difference. Are you shooting in raw of JPEG ?

Please explain how this relates to the XTi or does it? and what lens do you recommend for such high speed action shots.

I'd say grab out your manual and have a look at the parts that talk about focus points and modes other the Program, that should give you a starting point to understanding Picturesports comments

2Kool,

Check out this book. It's not specific to action work but it will give you a big headstart in understanding shutter vs aperature in your photography. Most local book stores should have it too.

This is the older pre-digital version of the same book, but the principles still apply.

I'm going to disagree on the shutter speeds. At those shutter speeds you can get beautiful results, however you likely need to improve your panning technique.

Don't give up on low shutter speeds just because it's easier to get better results. In the end with some repetition you will have the better results.

I'd also stick with auto white balance unless you know exactly what your manual results will be. They are a bit overexposed.

Hi Pete, Good 1st attempt, I agree and disagree with some of the comment here, depending how quick the bikes are going to get motion blur I would say you need to set your shutter speed between 1/250th and 1/400th, at Snetterton you could get away with 1/250th at the Esses at the end of the back straight as the bikes are turning right (the slow part) the fast left hander before they turn right I would go for 1/400th. for Russells chicane you could get away with 1/250th, every where else at Snetterton 1/400th.

Also I notice you are shooting into the Sun on most of you shots, this would probably explain why your pics have a lack of contrast, a hood would of course help this. If the Sun is low in the sky try and shoot with the Sun on your back. This is a pic I took at the BSB meeting last year, the bike is exiting Russell's chicane (same place you took your 3rd shot), shot at 1/250th.
Cheers Nick.
