Thanks everyone for the input. I certainly appreciate the advice. If I can handle the 500, then that prolly the route I'll take.

Had exactly the same problem.......... after much research have just ordered the 500 f4. Practiced holding 5kg weight lifting dumbells to simulate the weight of the 500 plus camera.... it is possible to hand hold for up to about 30 sec, but you will need a good rest between shots ( although my shoulder is O.K ), Not sure what I will eventually do regarding monopod etc, ............ Good Luck.

GET the 500mm f4 if you're serious about birds. You'll never regret buying this lens. While the 300 f2.8 is great glass, you will always wish you had the extra reach of the 500. Also, I keep a 1.4x on my 500 f4 all the time and results are razor freakin sharp.
