 I think I may have some type of malware/spyware/trojan, etc.

The mouse keeps disappearing and doing strange stuff, I end up shutting the system down, I can't get any work done.

I'm running xp home edition, sp1.

I've ran the AT&T antivirus program, it found nothing. So I installed AVG and it found about 300 spyware/adware threats that I've deleted. I've cleaned out the mouse too but still no luck.

What should I try next before I call At&T and have to talk to a machine for 15 minutes before I can get a live person that I then have to explain again, all the stuff I just told to the machine?

Thanks for the help.

Could be something simple like a connection. Unplug it and plug it back in. Maybe try a different USB port.

Buy or borrow a different mouse and see if it works any better. You can get generic ones pretty cheap.

LIke everything else...... more details are required. What kind of mouse? Anyhow I would go into your device manager, delete the mouse from there, uninstall any drivers from the add/remove programs in your control panel, reboot and reinstall drivers. Sounds like a corrupt driver to me. You could just reinstall the driver but doing the above steps is more thorough.

If it's a wireless mouse, could be low batteries. If it's a wired mouse, check the connection, and if you have access to another mouse, try that. It would at least rule out a pc problem.

Photographs are records of life. Pity they don't make music when you put them in a record player. :p

Do you happen to have any cheese or mustard in your floppy drive?

And if its your notebook's built-in touchpad/stick pointer, it could be a malfunction after several years of use - like the one on mine :(

Since Cassie said that she's "cleaned out" the mouse, I have to assume it's the old ball-type mouse.

I'd suggest buying a USB optical mouse, installing the drivers for it (if applicable) and seeing if that resolves the issue.

try going into device manager and re-installing the driver or looking for an update for it. or maybe the mouse has seen better days, might try a new one!

Ok, thanks, hopefully its just a connection problem/or maybe I'll buy a newer one. Its a regular ball type mouse. I'll try some of the stuff you guys suggested. I thought the symptoms were related to malware or spyware.

Thanks a lot!!

Wow, I'd have just gone out and bought a new one after unplugging/plugging it back in.

Then again I'm kinda rough on things so I don't really expect that long of a lifespan out of a mouse.
