Over exposure using 540EZ on Canon G2

I just bought the Canon G2 and tried to use the 540EZ
external flash. No matter which mode I used on the
G2 and 540EZ, all the pictures turned out over exposure. I even set the white balance for the flash
on the G2. Please let me know if it is the 540EZ or
something I have to do preventing the over exposure.
