Anybody recommend a good lens for car shows, both indoor and outdoor. Does IS help, and is it worth the extra money?

Are we talking 17 wide or 10 wide?
Could you recommend specific lenses?
And is the 430EX powerful enough?
Any opinions on IS?

I agree. I went to the SEMA show in Vegas 2 years ago and you DEFINITELY need a wide angle. Infact, I had a 20D and a Canon 10-22 at the time and that never came off the camera. Infact, I felt at times it wasn't even wide enough. When there are tons of people and the isles are so narrow, you would have a hard time taking photos with anything longer. So a ultra wide angle and a external flash.

I've used the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS and I loved the results. For me, the IS was amazing and 17mm was wide enough.

10mm ultra wide. you might not need flash. i didn't when i was at the LA auto show. plenty of lighting available light. you might have to shoot in manual for some exhibits because of the lighting. have fun!

Depends on how close you need to get to the cars. Usually car shows are very crowded so you'll want as wide as you can get. 430EX should be sufficient for a flash.
Assuming you have a 1.6x crop body the 10-22 would be a good choice. However I got pretty bored of that so now I take a medium telephoto along to cut out parts of cars instead of trying to get the entire thing in the frame. I think it draws more attention to the details. I've used the 85mm f/1.2L, 135mm f/2L, and the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS for this. The 100mm f/2.8 Macro might be a good choice as well, but I've found that if you get too close you see all the fingerprints and dirt.

Wide angle, a must...Flash, sometimes...I took most of these in Seattle with out a flash at 2.8. Next on my list is a wide angle...2.8 hopefully!

I agree with everyone else. I use my 10-20 and 430ex at car shows/meets indoor and out. I will be carrying my 24-70 with me as well now though.
