Wouldn't the differing trigger voltages of the 383 and 430 cause some havoc in the electrics?

If only the optical slave worked with the canon. I just can't understand why it works only once.

Is the flash set to ETTL?

Inspired byt the mod done for the 580EX I'm now adding an external sync port to the 430. It should be done tonight and I will post pictures.

And it still will not work with a garden variety optical slave.

But, it will make a cord easier to use.

Enjoy! Lon

I'm done with the mod and it works fine. As suggested here I'm going to use a wire to the 430 and an optical slave on the 383. This combination works fine.

Next I'm going to make a splitter cable that will take the input from the camera and split it to 2 the flashes.

Nope. Manual mode.

What sort of flash connector did you put on the 430EX?

Was it a 1/8 inch mono mini plug (3.5mm) or a 3/32 mono sub mini plug (2.5mm). If so, an easy sptitter is one of those headphone Y-connectors they sell at Radio shack.

Can we see a pic of the modification?

Enjoy! Lon

I wanted to stay at 2.5mm but could only find a stereo one. Not mono. I'll try to get some pictures up tonight. The finish leaves a bit to be desired but it's working.

LOL

I think both the camera and the flash will be fried.

With my 283 I get a jolt whenever I touch the hot shoe.

Here we go.

Pic #1. The internals of the bottom part of the 430EX. The hardest part in this modification was to actually attach the 2.5mm jack to this part. I had to cut a fairly big hole to do it.

Tip of 2.5mm plug goes to white wire. Base goes to black.

Pic #2. My home made softbox I used to take pic #1 with.

Pic #3. The final product. The plug is at the bottom (chrome phone plug). Works like a charm and triggers my main light (the 383) with the slave sync.

that's an interesting modification. Too bad canon doesn't just make a sync like all the normal manufacturers have.

I wonder if current noink flashes sport a PC cable.

They do doc. have one in my hand. Yet another orifice for sand or water to get in.

The $9 hotshoe adapter isn't a big deal, plus I can use it with my pocketwizards to fire something.

I still don't know how you guys have problems getting an optical slave to work. Mine work just fine with Ex flasheroonies. Are you using the hotshoe slaves or the Sonia slaves with the aluminum block adapter?

Hahahaha

I guess you're right. IMO it's a waste of money to use an ETTL flash off camera in manual mode.

Hey, and the 383 also has the same 2.5mm connector, so a cord would work on either.

Have you a cut a long sync cord yet and added a 2.5mm male mono connector on one end yet? The mono male will work in either the mono 2.5 female on the 383, or the stereo 2.5 female you put on the 430EX. So if you make a cord, be sure to use a male mono sub mini plug (2.5mm).

Enjoy! Lon

I'm actually using the connector I got with the 383 on the 430. Haven't made an extention cable yet. I bought plugs but soldering it is a bitc# and I gave up on it.
