No opteka is an aftermarket or third party accessory maker that builds grips that are compatible with Canon cameras. Some of these companies build them using the same mold that is used with the Canon BG-E2N grip while others (like Opteka) build their own mold and grip.

Hope that makes sense.

I had an Opteka one that I bought used and couldn't get to work well, got a used Canon one and had no problems.

I've heard that the Phottix grip is very good. Some that have both say they can't tell the difference between the Canon and the Phottix, except for labels. The Opteka is not like the Canon one in design. The batteries do not even load the same.

sorry call me stupid but am a bit lost :S

is the Opteka another type of canon battery grip?

It is a brand name of a battery grip manufactured as a low end version of the Canon grip. Opteka claims that their grips are made to exact Canon specs. While I can not verify that, I have bought and used their grip on my old 350D and it worked perfectly. I now have the Canon grip on my 5D and the build quality is better. (But you have to pay more for it).

Last night, just got my 450D BG-E5.
When my hands hold on to the BG the feeling was great..!!
Very Solid build and good quality finishing.

Come with 2 types of battery trays
Canon original batter tray and 2AA battery tray (6pcs)
and there is a compartment that you can keep you battery cover while you are using the BG.
