I have a business trip scheduled for May 6 - May 12 in Singapore. I have never travelled to Singapore - or really outside the US except for a London trip last summer (Canada and Jamaica don't count). Of course, I plan to take a camera as I will have some down time for sightseeing, shopping, etc. Since it is a business trip I don't want to drag around a bunch of camera gear. I plan on taking my 20D and one lens.

I recently sold my zoom lenses (except the kit) and bought a 28/50/85 combo. I have been challenging myself by taking just one prime with me (usually the 28 1.8) and exercising more thought and creativity to photograph from the perspective of the lens. The 50 has been used mainly for portrait shots of my kids and the 85 is for kid sports/activities.

I could buy a 17-50ish zoom as I will probably eventually replace the kit with one anyway - but that would be a slap in the face to my self-imposed lens limitations :)

I am curious on your thoughts on the following options:

1) take the 20D and 28 1.8 ("normal" lens on a crop) - hey that's all a lot of people had "back in the day" and some fine photos were taken!

2) go ahead and dump the kit and buy a Tamron 17-50 to take

Canon Ti5 w/ 18-135 IS STM, 70-300 IS, 85 1.8
Canon 20D w/ Tamron 17-50
Olympus PEN E-PL2 w/ VF-2, Panny 20, 14-42 II
Flash - 550EX, 430EX II, Vivitar 283's
Other - Bogen tripod w/ ballhead, Vivitar monopod, Kenko tubes

I'd recommend the zoom. I was in Singapore in December and got a lot of use from my 28-75 and, to a lesser degree, my 12-24. I used the 70-300, but probably could have gotten by without it. Of course, I spent all of my time either in the car to and from appointments or walking in and around Orchard Road, Shangri-La, etc. However, there are a couple of animal and bird parks where a tele may come in handy.

Humidity was very high and rain showers fell several days. I carried a plastic cover in my backpack to cover it in case of rain while walking and it came in handy.

Have fun.

So could you have gotten by with 28 as your widest? That is really the question. I could take the kit for the few times i might need it - or even the 85mm for that matter. I am just wanting to keep it simple...

Yes, if I had been forced to, I could have gotten by with my 28-75.

I assume you will be shooting in a city.... I would never travel without something at least 17mm wide (crop camera). Too many photo ops that I would give up. "Foot zoom" is fine until you run into a building and can't back up. You tell the building to move, and it tells you to bug off. The cheek..... ;)

BTW, have not seen you and Lola in RRTP for a long time so I thought I'd drop in, say hi and add my 2 cents. I think they need to be reminded of how tragic it is ;)

Thanks, Yoda. I get what you mean about the buildings... just not so stressed over missing shots these days. Come to think of it, not too stressed about any shots these days.

Photography has become de-emphasized lately - maybe the PetKal competitions just sucked the fire right out of me for a bit. Hopefully it comes back as the weather improves...
