No stalking David, I promise ;) I'm just generally interested in threads about post processing, software and the physics of digital cameras.

The GIMP is better known in the unix world - partly because it comes as part of many Linux distributions :)

I would guess it's less known in the Windows world since Windows has its own product history - or maybe people just start using whatever ships with their camera ;)

e-k

No, I meant ArcSoft PhotoStudio, Photoshop Elements or the like.

[Edit: I just tried accessing http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html (external link) and didn't have any problem. Are you able to access the site and the downloads just don't work?]

Works for me...

If problem is download, make sure Internet Explorer isn't trying to block your download (check for bar at top of page.)

If problem is the page itself, maybe firewalled? Don't know why else it wouldn't work.

When I try to download it it says We're Sorry.
"The SourceForge.net Website is currently down for maintenance.
We will be back shortly"
ArcSoft PhotoStudio?I didn't download any software that came with the camera because nothing seemed very interesting then (last december). Let me try to find the CD.

Don't know what the problem is, everytime I try it works fine, and asks me where to save the file.

You are trying the link E-K and I gave you, right?

As far as software with canon, the best is DPP (Digital Photo Professional) for RAW processing. Zoombrowser I use only when I want a RAW processed image to be as close to an in-camera processed image as possible.

Oh yeah, this might be helpful by the way. It's a link that some (amateur) graphics designers who used GIMP used to use for tutorials and stuff.

Tell us exactly what URL you are trying. www.gimp.org (external link) is fine right now.

Since this seems like a good place to mention it, in working with the A620 RAW files, I've found greycstoration, an open source noise reducer (among other things) that seems to work really well.

I don't use gimp frecuentle, but some times if I am in a linux machine and wnat ot do something there (like my laptop) I have to use it.

But recently I installed in my thumbdrive a portable version of Gimp, and is great, specially if you are at work or at a friend house and the only photo editor you have is Paint.

In other word if you have photoshop, use photoshop, but if you need something else, try gimp is free and is good too.

BTW, the portable version of gimp (and other open source apps) are at http://portableapps.com/ (external link)
