If you could have one big telephoto which would it be. All around shooting sports, wildlife, landscape. Not so much low light or night stuff though, maybe some every now and then.

With a TC1.4 and TC2 it gets you close to the best of all... however my friend has a 500 IS and it is pretty decent too since it is much, much lighter and more portable. It won't do the sports that my 400 does, but I can do the birding that he does.... more or less. Mike

I tried one in a shop and was surprised how it could be hand-held (I'm quite big). I'd like to think my more distant future has one of those in it. Mark.

You're probably gonna need them for the 400 2.8 or the 600 f/4. Given the choice, I'd probably take the 500, because it's something that I could still reasonably use handheld, but it wouldn't suck too tremendously with a monopod and flash for night sports.
