Ok here are some more pics, this time these are of some aphids, I was hunting around in the garden trying to find some things to photograph when I spot a whole load of these guys on the stem of a weed type plant, I noticed later that they're sucking the juice out of the plant.
Does anyone know what those strange tube like extensions are on their rear, i noticed some on a nother pic and they looked like they were leaking / venting fluid.

Comments welcomed

The extensions on the rear on the bottom pics look their budding/birthing young. They have a birth cycle called parthenogenesis - don't know if I remember correctly but I think at least for female young there's no sexual reproduction, just the budding/cloning, and they do it in spades. :)

Canon EOS 20D / EF100mm F2.8 USM Macro / +the kit lens that I now feel like throwing away.

Nice set with great detail.

Were you using the SIgma 70-300mm for these? I noticed that your FL was 113mm at times.

nice photo's, how did you get this close?

Aphids secrete a sticky honeydew, ants farm aphids to collect this secretion. I have a tree in front of my house with loads of aphids and on some days the car parked underneath looks like it is covered in sugar.

Aphids can reproduce without sexual contact. Actually an aphid when borne is already pregnant! So mother gives birth to daughter and granddaughters at the same time.

sorry, don't know what the tube like extension is.
but, i do know that lady beetles love to munch on aphids, seems they are a tasy snack for 'em.
if you find a lday beetle in the garden, move it over to where the aphids are and snap away. you'll get some awsome pics.
