Ring Flash VS Hand Held Flash - HELP!

I'm torn between which flash I should purchase first. I know they both have different purposes, but I was wondering which would be the better choice. Also - which are some good brands.

Well, I think to get a good response you need to tell us more about your plans for shooting. Are you planning on macro plants and bugs, sports, fashion/glamour, etc? When you say "Handheld Flash" are you referring to a speedlight style strobe?

I would not use a ring flash for sports shots, but I would use one for glamour/fashion photos.

You can use speedlights for almost anything, you just may want to pick up a light modifier of some type (ie, soft box, umbrella, snoot, etc).
