I am going on safari this summer in East Africa and am just in the process of purchasing extra batteries, memory cards etc, but am struggling to decide which additional filters I should get.
I currently have 10-22 with a Hoya Pro1 UV 77mm filter, 70-200L F4 with an Opteka UV 67mm filter (cheap I know but OK) and new Sigma 17-70 without any filter yet.
I am not sure if I should just get an additional Hoya UV filter for my Sigma or should I also consider CPL's? I can't afford to spend a fortune so was looking on ebay at perhaps a 77mm Hoya Pro1 CPL with a step up ring 72-77 so I could also use it 10-22 & 17-70. Then I saw 77mm B+W CPL (uncoated) for a few pounds more ..... or other option 67mm CPL for 70-200 ahhhh!
Help:confused:

I would think a good multi-coated UV on each lens would help in the dusty conditions. I would also think that a CPL would be a must. You could get one filter in your largest size, and use step down rings to fit the other lenses. Only downside to the one filter solution is that you would probably not be able to use the hoods when you are stepping down.

A CPL filter would be a good idea. Maybe an ND filter. I also like using a red Intensifier filter with the CPL but that's a matter of taste.

If you get a single sized CPL filter and stepping rings, you can always pick up a collapsible rubber lens hood to fit the filter and use it with every lens. The only problem is that the hood would need to accomodate both wide angle and telephotos lens. One solution is something like http://www.bhphotovideo.com …tails&Q=&sku=23169&is=REG (external link) or http://www.amazon.com …N=B00006JATZ&linkCode=asn (external link)

My gosh, quality lenses like that, quality trip and you skimp on filters? You remind me of a friend who went on a hunting trip in the Yukon and bought reloads, cheap reloads for his 30/06. Use Heliopan or B+W only.

Thanks for your comment but unfortunately I do not have unlimited funds ....wish I did! We have had to save very hard and compromise on a lot of other things to do this trip. I would like to buy some good filters but can't afford to buy top of the range new UV filters for all lenses and CPL's as well.

Thanks crn3371 & JackProton for your help and suggestions.

[QUOTE=JackProton;2887198]I also like using a red Intensifier filter with the CPL but that's a matter of taste.

Do you have any examples of shots the red intensifier with the CPL? I'm curious.

Think I've decided on a Hoya Pro1 CPL for the 10-22, a B+W coated UV for 17-70. Just can't decide what to do about the 70-200 either save for another CPL, get a 81A warming or a better UV.

Here's a quick example. Not the best but I think you'll get the idea. Kind of subtle..

First an image with just a CPL filter.

Lastly an image with the CPL filter and a red intensifier.

Thanks Jack I like the effect, interesting to see the possibilities. Think I'll go for CPL's for both 10-22 and 70-200 then I can always add extra's later for different effects.

The only filter I use in Africa is a B+W CPL, otherwise I do not use any filters.

I think the red intensifier is redundant with digital and PP. I find filters to be annoying if you have to fiddle with them. Exception is the CP. I'd buy the biggest CP you need and the step up rings for the remainder of the lenses. Buy the best you can afford. Only ones I can recommend are B+W or Heliopan. I bought slim multi-coated since I would never stack filters.

I think the red intensifier is redundant with digital and PP.

The red intensifier filter selectively cuts a narrow band of yellow light leaving the overall color temperature more or less intact but making warm colors appear redder. Its not quite the same effect as, say, kicking up the red channel in post-processing. But, as I said, its a matter of taste.
