My wife was getting our daughter up for school one morning and they heard a bunch of blue jays and chickadees squawking loudly. She figured it might be the neighbor's cat, or maybe the fox that visits in the Spring but when she went around the house and looked out the window this is what she saw (Note it was taken with a Sony P&S through the window):

When they walked out for the bus, the birds were making a fuss in the trees near the driveway, but she didn't see the owl. When I got home from work about 9 hours later, we spotted it in a pine tree. No wonder we don't see more of them!

It was the best shot I could get with my XT and 100-400 without scaring him away.

Wow! That's amazing that anyone could see that. Now you know where he hides out it is only a matter of time before we see a portrait here.

Wow...how awesome! I love Screech Owls and hardly ever see them. Can't believe it's right outside your house. Love the surprised eyes on the first and the habitat and focus on the second one. Very nice.

Very nice find indeed with the second shot being my favourite....this is the owl i most want to see and pohotograph. I have a tree in my yard that is perfect for this species...its begging for a tiny Screech Owl;) These guys usually don't go far from their roosts by the way so it may still be in your area.

Thanks all for the comments. I don't think we ever would have spotted him in the tree if it wasn't for my wife and daughter noting the songbirds scolding in that area earlier in the day.

I've looked for him since and haven't seen him. That day there was a big snow cap over that roost so I think he felt safer there.

I'm so envious of you Carl. I have been trying to get one of these guys for a long time. Owl houses in my yard and woods with no luck. Working on something new lately, trying to call one to me.

How cool is that? The first shot really shows how tiny this owl is.

I just found out there is an Eastern Screech owl located nearby. Went looking for it late today but didn't see it (maybe it was too sunny at the time). Hope it's still around as I have yet to see or photograph this species.

Thanks for the kudos. Good luck canondsluser! I haven't seen or heard the screech owl since. The woodcocks or "timberdoodles" are certainly making themselves heard though. If only they weren't nocturnal!
