Without flash comp +1/3 all my pictures are coming out underexposed. I was wondering what I was doing wrong that was causing this. Here are some pics w/ direct and bounced flashing showing the problem. EXIF data is intact.

You might get a lot out of this thread. I assume the 430EX and 580EX act similarly.

Here is another thread that may be of interest:

However, in this particular thread, it turned out that the flash AND the camera were both defective. After Canon repaired them, they work perfectly, but it appears to be normal for the Canon XTi to require about +2/3 stop additional FEC. After the repair, I routinely add +2/3 FEC in E TTL to get a nice exposure and I am quite happy with the results. Before the repair, it was almost like shooting without a flash.

Are you using the camera FEC or the flash FEC? Those look like more than a 1/3 stop difference between the two pictures marked "0" and "1/3". Are you sure your camera is not set to some - FEC which is taking effect when the flash FEC is set to 0?

^^ You got it! I didn't even think to check the in-camera FEC. I had it set to -2. Don't I feel stupid now :)

I shot an entire event with FEC at -2 last November. All was not lost as I was using two cameras for the event.
