The taped Kenko Pro 1.4x is a hair better in IQ, but in my impression not as fast in AF as the cheapo Tamron.

Romy

Again, that works out well for me. Those are the exact same compromises I would have made. Thanks for sharing your research :)

I'd consider the taped Sigma and Canon 1.4x as virtually useless at f/8 as far as AF with 1.6 CF bodies are concerned.

Yeah, that is my conclusion having owned the Canon, Sigma and Kenko Pro's. Maybe I should look at getting the Tamron. What is the exact model please sir as I see they have a few running over several years. IS it a current model?

Yes, mine is a current model - it's the cheapest 1.4x TC in the Tamron line. I bought mine for about USD 70 a couple of years ago but it's now listed at B&H at USD 109.95. Still a very good value though.

Here's a link (external link) to the B&H listing.

Here's a couple of fliers with the said TC + 20D + 400 5.6L:

And here's a shoot-out among my Sigma, Canon and standard Tamron TCs:

There's an interesting post on Dpreviw about the 100-400L with the Kenko 1.4 converter, the OP says he get better pics with the converter fitted!
