I'm looking into getting automatic extension tubes but I went on ebay and one seller says they can't be used with ef-s lens. Does this apply to all extension tubes or just this sellers?

Kenko ext tubes can't be used on EF-S lenses without a little bit of modification (cutting a plastic baffle). Jessops own brand extension tubes do work with EF-S lenses. Don't know about any others.

Ok thanks. I thought for a second I was going to have to buy a new lens just to do macro with extension tubes.

Could I use Jessop's tubes with my Sigma 17 - 70? What, if anything would I gain?

Yes you could with the lens set around 40-50mm you'd be shooting at over 1:1 magnification but the focus distance from the front of the lens would only be 2 to 3".

Thanks Brian. I have no problems getting that close, which I can and often do with this lens, but the results, even when focused properly are usually disappointing. The images just lack that extra bit of oomph
I'll give it a go.

Been shooting with tubes for a while now, had the same issues as you last year, this year armed with a flash the difference is huge...!

Hi Brian,

I have a very stupid question....

Is my Sigma 105mm lens an EF-S? Does EF-S only refer to Canon lenses, or is it refering to the mount??

***I was told there were no stupid questions, so please be gentle on me***

Hi Parm
No the sigma 105 is an EF mount lens. EF-S refers to lenses that only fit on APS-C 1.6 crop digital cameras- they cannot be used on FF cameras (or 1.3 crop cameras).
EF-S is canons nomenclature for 1.6 crop only lenses.
Sigma use DC as denoting the same (not to be confused with DG)

One of those questions I was afraid to ask...

My Sigma 105mm will work with the Kenko tubes, WITHOUT having to mod the tubes???

Hi,
Just to add to the EF-S discussion the Canon S designation stands for "short back" which means that due to the smaller sensor the lens can be positioned closer to the sensor and actually protrudes further into the camera body.

The picture below is of my EF-S 60 (on the left) and Sigma 70-300 DG APO. As you can see the EF-S inner ring protudes further. I guess this is the problem with certain tubes. I can confirm this lens works fine with the Jessops tubes.

That is correct.

Also, Sigma's DC lenses should fit without problem. While designed to work best on crop sensors, their mounts are still regular EF, not EF-s.
