I have the Sigma 105 f2.8 macro, paid @ $320.00 used for it, and it is a SUPERB lens!!....Great 1:1 macro, and also an excellent fairly fast medium telephoto lens on a 1.6 ratio sensor....:lol::lol:

Hello,

Well after long debate I have decided to get a macro lens for my rebel XT. The problem is I can only at the moment afford to pay 500-700 dollars for one. Are there any great macro lenses for that much? Thank-you for your help

Suzanne

Don't only go by how much you have to spend, but what focal length and working distance you need. All the current macro lenses are excellent, especially the ones with a non-extending focus barrel (e.g., Canon 100, Sigma 150). I personally had both the 100 and 150 and kept the 150. But it depends on what FL and WD you prefer and what you want to shoot.

I have the canon 100 and I can say the thing is SHARP SHARP SHARP. It is so sharp it almost cuts the eyes.

Agree with an above poster. All macros are very sharp. Get one that you think will fit your shooting needs and style. I have the 60 macro. Perfect for me. Once in a great while I'll take a macro photo with it. I don't have a need to have a tripod and get in super close. Even so, the 60 will produce just the same as the others.

What I personally like about the 60 is that the focal length is in my walk-around zone. I use it mainly for general purpose.

All the macros will double as excellent portrait type lenses.

If you need to be in close and plan to "get into" macro shooting then length will be important to you. Otherwise, if you will be a casual macro person like me, think about what you are going to do with the lens when you are not shooting macro.

Just some thoughts.

As many people here mentioned, you can't really go wrong with a macro lens from any of the larger manufacturers. Personally, I would just stay clear of Sigma, as you get built-in obsolescence due to the reverse engineering of the Canon EF-interface.

My bag currently contain both the 60 mm F/2.8 and the 100 mm F/2.8 Canons, and both are superb. I use the 60 mm as a walkaround as well, often for indoor candid portraits, and as a landscape lens. I only got the 100 mm very recently, with a view to spring returning :), so I''ll start using it a lot more soon.

Kind regards, Wim

I have the Sigma 105, but if I was buying now I would probably go for the EF-S 60 f/2.8. It is probably the sharpest macro lens available for your camera.
