Hello Everybody,

I am just wondering if anybody has been using 100-400 f4.5-5.6 with 1.4x or 2.0x extender. Would you buy ext. to this lens? Or would anybody happen to have sample pics?

Thank you so much

Indrek Aigro

I would NOT recommend using the lens with an extender. The lens is already dark and an extender will make it slow.

I have a 1.4x on the camera. So far, I got my lens & extender in December, so not much to show with winter weather, but I have learned a few thints:
- there is a learning curve.
- I have to manually focus on my 30D, even when I tried the tape on pins trick, so...
- try to shoot with f-stop of 8 or larger, so you have some depth of field to off set poor manual focusing.
Not much help, but I hope to shoot this combo more in the coming weeks.

Sorry to disagree, I have the 100-400L and i use it with my kenko 1.5x (cheap one) and it works pretty good.
- IQ in the center is still pretty pretty sharp
- IQ at the border degrades a little but pretty usable
- AF is slower but WORKS GOOD and reliable

I disagree as well, I have 100-400 + Canon 1.4x

This was from my first time out with the 1dmkiin, have many many comparable and even sharper images from same spot, this was not a fluke. :D

And how was that - 1.4x has AF on 5d and 1D, 2.0x has AF on 1D only?

I use mine with the 1.4xTCII with minimal loss in IQ. On the other hand, I've never seen as great a shot as that red bird by a previous poster with the 2x and 100-400L. Great shot!

I stay away from an extender with my 100-400 because of manual focus. With the push pull and then try to manual focus when shooting fast moving subjects it just keeps me to busy.

I think you lose AF on the 5D with either TC.
If I remember right, must be at f/5.6 or wider (lens & TC combined) for AF to work.
At 400mm, the 1-4 is already at f/5.6 so no go.
Manual focus only.

I hate to use any TC with my 100-400L because i got 300 f2.8L IS
I did test with 100-400 +2xTC and posted the results on this forum long time ago, it was good enough anyway.
